Gold was discovered near Ballarat in 1851, and the influx gold miners and prospectors transformed it from a pastoral town into Victoria's largest city. Ballarat's growth slowed after the 1880s, but it remains a major inland regional centre and tourist destination, having retained much of its Victorian era heritage and is known for its grand heritage listed buildings and gardens.

Experience Sovereign Hill and learn about the history of the gold rush and life in the 1850's. Pan for gold and go down into the underground mine for a guided tour. See traditional blacksmiths and craftsmen shilling their trades. Enjoy unique period style shopping, real life characters and entertainment, and a host of activities available including stage coach rides and costume photos. Browse the many souvenir shops and enjoy a great choice of cafes and restaurants for lunch (own expense).
